5 Ways to Enjoy a Summer Getaway

Summer is the best time for a getaway. Problem is, everyone knows that as well. Airlines and resorts can be fully-booked weeks before your travel dates and beaches can be too crowded and noisy. And because it’s peak season for travel, rates and prices go up because of the demand.

Here are five (5) tips that may help you have a fun and meaningful summer vacation:

Look for ‘off the beaten track’ destinations.

Look and search for equally interesting places but are not so known or popular to tourists. For example, while Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro is a popular beach destination this summer, on the other side is Occidental Mindoro which has equally good, and maybe cleaner, beaches to offer. Better yet, rates are more affordable and there’s lesser crowd to compete with for travel and accommodation.

Stay away from mainstream accommodation.

Instead of checking in at the usual hotel or popular resort, look for a quaint inn, a charming B&B (bed & breakfast) or a new pension house, for your accommodation. These are less expensive and you can opt to bring more friends or stay longer for your summer trips.

Try the local and the authentic.

For chows and finds, ask the locals for their popular eateries and shops. Ask for the best dish and pasalubong in town. Usually, the best culinary secrets are those disguised in humble packaging.

Be flexible and open to new experiences.

Though you may have an idea or expectations from your trip, try to be flexible and be open to trying out new things. The itinerary may never be followed and so you must be ready for changes.

Be friendly.

Be it asking for directions, accommodations, popular attractions, or food to enjoy, the locals are your best bet. So be friendly, nice, and polite at all times. Who knows the best ‘thing’ you can get from your summer getaway is a friend!
