Social Media unite for Earth Hour
The age of technology has infiltrated even the world's first global
election—Earth Hour 2009. Social media is being called forth, and
students in today's high schools can actually do something without
leaving the four corners of their classrooms.
For a little backgrounder, the Earth Hour is the climate change
initiative of the World Wide Fund for Nature. Currently on its 3rd
year, it has spread worldwide, igniting the passion of individuals,
business, governments who want to become united and send a message to
the rest of the effects of global warming.
Earth Hour 2009 is a battle between the Earth and Global Warming. If
you want to vote for the former, you turn off your lights this coming
March 28, from 8:30-9:30pm local time. If you vote for the latter, then
leave your lights on.
WWF is targeting a billion votes for Earth. You should be one of them, and take initiative in spreading the word.
Here's how:
- Banners and online badges - download previously prepared banners and add a Vote Earth badge to your websites and web logs.
- “We Vote Earth” signs – to show you're voting for the Earth, these signs come in different sizes for the lawn, mailbox and even windows.
- Stickers and wallpapers - then send the link to family and friends.
- Register
- join the online movement and vote. From this site, you can also
receive newsletters with useful tips and reminders for the March 28
event.
- Email - do an email blast and tell all your friends, students, family members about voting for Earth.
- Blogs and podcasts - free blogging sites like Blogger
can let you write a blog post about Earth Hour, the importance of
global action and how participation in Earth Hour can make a
difference. Tag other people to join in Facebook and other social
networking sites. The more people talk about it, the more people will
join.
- Network - twitter your thoughts on Earth Hour in
140 characters or less. But do it constantly so more people will read
it. Also join any of the approximately 50 Earth Hour social media
profiles on Facebook, YouTube, MySpace, flickr and Twitter.
- Videos - create a video as to why people should join and post it on YouTube. Embed the codes of existing Earth videos to personal profiles in networking sites.
- Personal Earth Hour
– download the guide on how to run Earth Hour in your respective city
or town. Once you have an activity for Earth Hour and would like to
share it to the organizers and the media, email it in detail to myearthhour@earthhour.org

everyone from the youth to the businessmen, to the teachers to the
government officials to help in the Earth Hour 2009 campaign.
Make use of blogs, podcasts, online video makers, mobile phones and

be a powerful force for driving change, and the Earth needs all the
