Students and faculty from engineering schools nationwide will once again compete for the most innovation wireless applications during the 8th SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards of Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) at the SMX Convention Center on February 22.

This year’s search for the best wireless applications developed by Smart’s partner schools under the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP) highlights the thrust to go mobile with the theme “Innovation in the Palm of Your Hand”.

A new category has been created to encourage the development of mobile applications that run on the Android platform and which range from entertainment to social networking apps to productivity and privacy tools.

This is on top of the main search that encourages the development of end-to-end mobile broadband applications or solutions using Smart’s platform of products and services to address problems, issues or needs of communities or industries.

Winners are expected to receive cash prizes of as much as P1 million with P500,000 for the champion and an equivalent amount going to the school in the form of a grant.

The 8th SWEEP Awards also includes the PalaECEpan quiz bee, which tests the intellectual prowess of student contestants from SWEEP partner schools. Smart is hosting this year’s PalaECEpan together with the Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines (IECEP), which has accredited the event as an activity where its members can earn Continuing Professional Education (CPE) points for the renewal of their professional licenses.

Now on its 8th consecutive year, the SWEEP Awards is part of Smart’s efforts to make the Internet more relevant among school partners as part of its ‘Internet for All’ advocacy.

The awards program not only encourages colleges and universities to explore Internet connectivity and access in aid of wireless solutions aimed at addressing community concerns, but also encourages public school partners to showcase their community via the development of web sites, video and online blogs.
